Your plan (A) to deliver a big project is in place. You have invested a considerable amount of time meeting with people to discuss workloads, resources, and critical dates. Then you implement the plan and after a few weeks, everything falls apart.
Don’t worry if you find yourself in this situation, most people who have accomplished anything of significance has experienced this, and given the pace of work in most organizations, this is becoming the “norm”. In fact, most new ventures, whether it’s launching a new business or the start of a new project, the “A plan” can become obsolete in as fast as 30 seconds.
If you find yourself in this position, try one these strategies to help get you and your team back on course.
Goal Adjust
Objectives and goals should always serve as an anchor when executing a strategic plan. When things don’t go according to plan, your goals should immediately become your point of reference. Ask yourself, are the goals still viable or do they no longer make sense? If not, adjust your goals accordingly and go from there.
Restrategize
Examine the strategies you are using to achieve your goals, and ask yourself which strategies are not working, and which ones require adjusting. Often, we find ourselves fixated on a certain way of doing things, and unaware these actions are not producing the desired results.
Act
Make a list of the positive actions that need to be taken, and then act on them. Keeping in mind the goals that need to be accomplished, start tracking the actions that are working, and the ones that are not.
When teams develop the performance mind-set for a modern day workplace, they are able to stay agile in order to adjust their “A plan” when things don’t go according to plan. Learning these skills is now vital for businesses and organizations to thrive in a world economy.
All the best in achieving your highest performance.
