Part 2…How to Make Practice Perfect

Practice_ID-100212423In my previous post I talked about the importance of quality practice to improve workplace performance, and how often practice is overlooked (see: Does practice make perfect? ). So, I like to talk about the “how to” in this post and share with you some great practice habits from the world of elite performers you can use.

Chunk it

Often we get overwhelmed when learning something new, or wanting to improve something. All great performers have learned how to chunk everything down into manageable practice size chunks. This enables high-level performers to learn things a lot faster than the average person, giving them the ability to focus on a particular area of their performance that requires improving.

See it

High-level performers use various learning styles when practicing and improving their performance. When they review their performance from either a video or audio recording, they are able make effective changes immediately. If you are able to review your performance alongside your manager or trusted work colleague, ask them for their  perspective on your performance.

Perform it

We can spend a lot of time reading, thinking things through, and that’s a great place to start at the initial stages of practicing. However you want to reach a practice state where you turn off your “thinking mind” and just do it. You want to put yourself in a natural practice state, allowing everything to follow freely, deepening the skills you have just learned.

Remember, performance does make “nearly perfect”. Setting time aside for quality practice enables you to reach any new goal or performance level you set out to achieve.

All the best in achieving your highest performance.
